A couple of months ago, we had a such blast at Maverick Cycles’ Gravel and Burgers that I instantly knew we had to have a Send It to bring in the greater GBC community.
If you haven’t been to this Whittier enclave, you’ll find a number of trails in the hills behind that are super gravel friendly and playful.
Maverick Cycles itself is both a coffee shop and a produces a mouthwatering collection of apparel and accessories serving as a great cycling hub for the area thanks to Kevin Kang.
Before getting into the details, here are the RIDE RULES.
- The climbing when it does happen will take A LOT OF work. These rides will be extremely difficult if you’re a first timer or working your way back.
- We will meet at Maverick Cycles(15807 Whittier Blvd) for coffee at 8:00am, roll at 8:30am.
- Parking is available in the neighborhood, especially along Russell St. that branches east from Maverick Cycles
- The dirt is technical in certain sections. Good working brakes are a must!
- Everyone rides at their own risk. Make sure to bring your own tubes and a couple of water bottles. We’ll be stopping at mile 18 for refills.
- Riding tires 40mm and above will do the trick for most, as the climbs are steep and in the teens, while the downhill is technical. and there’s some soft patches on the dirt descents, as well as loose pavement on the road.
- There will be a number of regroups, but once everyone’s back, we roll!
- This will not be race pace, but we reiterate this ride is tough. If you’re just getting back into riding, I suggest you read Rule #1 again.
Once again, Riverbed Bums will be on hand after serving burgers and we’ll all be hanging around the shop after.
For the route, Brandon Pfaff, who also did a feature of Maverick Cycles in The Radavist, laid out this 30 mile route that starts off covering the dirt from last months ride, but branches out further east.
We’ll be heading up towards Turnbull doing a nearly two mile climb up Rose Hills Fire Road before taking in the fun single track on the Seventh Street Loop.
The ride continues east hitting the throttle on the Schabarum Trail before looping back through the Puente Hills Preserve.
As you can see in our video last month, there’s a lot of fantastic riding around and if you’ve never been out this way, you’ll be pleasantly surprised!
